Science Saturdays… session 2
12 04 2008Just finishing up another Science Saturday in the Bronx with teachers in the STEM grant. Today we studied hurricanes, reviewed weather basics and constructed simple weather instruments – the results were FAB – anemometers, a thermometer, barometers and more. A number of teachers in the workshop are from St. Elizabeth’s – www.steliznyc.org – and they are a weatherbug school! The workshop was very interactive with many websites the children can visit. I also enjoyed the hands-on activities and the students will definitely have fun with the projects; especially with the science fair coming up. Thank you for sharing your findings with us.
I enjoyed this workshop because of the interreactive activites, as well as the videos that were shown by the instructor. The were vrey inforamtive and I will be able to use with my students as a rsource in the classromm. The websites that were provided are also helpfu and provide ejoyable activities and lessons.
I enjoyed today’s lesson; in particular, the hands-on activities of building an anemomeer and barometer, and plotting the path of a hurricane. My students will find these activites very engaging and interesting.
I appreciated having time to review pertinent websites that would be helpful when teaching my 5-8 classes.
We enjoyed this enriching workshop because it gave us an informative and a scientific approach to predicting weather. We will surely be able to integrate the acitivties to our various subject areas. Thank you.
The Science Saturdays #2 was very amazing and engaging! I learned a lot especially the constructions of weather tools models like anemometer and thermometer. They will help me greatly in explaining to my students the principles governing these tools.

It was amazing how the class became very quiet when the video that opened the class showed a huge hurricane and the class realized it was Katrina.
I enjoyed plotting the path of a hurricane and the time to explore the websites shown during the class. I’m looking forward to introducing my class to weather and climate. They have learned the definitions but now these websites will bring understanding. Enjoy your Spring Break!

I enjoyed the class today. When i went to school in the 1950’s we did not have the oppurtunity to study weather in such depth as the elementary students of today are required to do. I learned so much about the weather.
I will make a weather station with my class. I think that they will find making the weather instruments a great deal of fun.
The visual information was stunningly clear and complimented the theme of today’s session exceptionally well. The presentation was comprehensive and logical and the list of web resources was and links is prodigious. It’s obvious that the presenter spent a lot of time and effort putting the workshop together.
It’s commendable that the minor problems that invariably crop up while using the internet did not phase her in the least; there were plenty of alternative actions available. Good job.
The topics were interesting. I am a visual learner. I loved the visuals that gave me a lot of information. It’s like a refreshing course.
The hand-on activities are superb. They are informative and fun.
Todays lesson was great and the hands on activity we created were great as well. I would expect more workshops like this. I hope to use this in my classes as this will enable my students to creat some of the hands on and will enable me to bring real life situation to the classroom.

Wow, today was great! Lynn and Steve had the time to fly. Lynn presented a variety of information for hands on activities in the classroom, websites for lesson plans or children interactions, and a variety of information for support. Steve was the “best hostess.” I enjoyed working with my colleagues and creating the various devices to measure temperature or wind. Once again thanks to everyone for working collaboratively so the time flew. I can’t wait for the next session.
